How the answers are worked out

Each appliance has a typical wattage and typical hours of use per day, the same figures that drive its page on this site, and seasonal appliances count only the days of their season. Annual electricity is watts ÷ 1000 × hours × days. On Hard, every pair is either a close call, within about 2.5× of each other, or a trap where the higher-wattage appliance loses because it runs for minutes while the other runs all day. Easy uses pairs that differ by at least 3×. A new set is drawn each time.
