Is an Efficient Refrigerator Worth It? Savings and Payback (2026)
With electricity at 18.3¢ per kWh in the US, replacing a working refrigerator takes 11.4 years to pay back, which is slow. When yours needs replacing anyway, the extra cost of the efficient model comes back in 2.5 years.
An efficient refrigerator cuts electricity by 66%: about 430 kWh, worth $78.86 a year in the US. Worth it when replacing
- From
- 10 to 15 year old fridge-freezer (EU class F, or pre-2010 US model), about 650 kWh a year
- To
- Current A-rated or ENERGY STAR fridge-freezer, about 220 kWh a year
- Usage
- Always on; the figures depend on the model, not on how you use it
| Scenario | You pay | Payback | Net over its life |
|---|---|---|---|
| Replace a working refrigerator now | $900.00 | 11.4 years | $204.07 |
| Replacing anyway: choose the efficient one | $200.00 | 2.5 years | $904.07 |
Prices are typical figures; type your own quotes above. Net over its life is the total saving over the years it lasts minus what you pay. It ignores inflation, interest and changes in electricity prices, which is conservative while prices are rising.
Our take
When an old fridge needs replacing, the efficient model costs little more and earns that back within a few years, because a fridge never switches off. Replacing a working fridge purely for the electricity pays only where power is expensive, or when the old one is past 15 years and failing.
How the two models compare
| Inefficient | Efficient | |
|---|---|---|
| Model | 10 to 15 year old fridge-freezer (EU class F, or pre-2010 US model) | Current A-rated or ENERGY STAR fridge-freezer |
| Electricity per year | 650 kWh | 220 kWh |
| Cost per year here | $119.21 | $40.35 |
| Over 14 years | $1,669 | $564.87 |
Usage behind these figures: always on; the figures depend on the model, not on how you use it. Basis: ENERGY STAR: a 15-year-old fridge about 850 kWh vs 400 for a current certified model; EU label: class F fridge-freezers 300 to 400 kWh, class A 100 to 150 kWh. The Refrigerator page prices the appliance at its own typical hours, which you can change there.

Local electricity prices, with the same purchase price read in local currency, which is a simplification. The saving column is what matters: the higher the price of electricity, the faster any upgrade pays back.
