Is an Efficient Space Heater Worth It? Savings and Payback (2026)

With electricity at 18.3¢ per kWh in the US, the saving is too small to justify the purchase: 18.2 years to pay back if you replace a working space heater, and 15.1 years for the extra cost of the efficient model when you are replacing anyway.

An efficient space heater cuts electricity by 67%: about 900 kWh, worth $165.06 a year in the US. Not for the electricity

Resistance space heater or baseboard, 1,500 W, about 1,350 kWh a year

Prices are typical figures; type your own quotes above. Net over its life is the total saving over the years it lasts minus what you pay. It ignores inflation, interest and changes in electricity prices, which is conservative while prices are rising.

Our take

For one room heated a few hours a day, the saving does not pay for an installed heat pump. The case changes when it replaces resistance heating for most of a home: several rooms like this one multiply the saving, the installation cost grows more slowly, and you gain cooling in summer.

Usage behind these figures: one room, 6 hours a day through a 150-day heating season. Basis: A heat pump moves 2 to 4 units of heat per unit of electricity; a resistance heater delivers exactly one. Seasonal COP of 3 assumed, for the same heat as a 1,500 W heater running 6 hours a day for 150 days. The Space Heater page prices the appliance at its own typical hours, which you can change there.

Local electricity prices, with the same purchase price read in local currency, which is a simplification. The saving column is what matters: the higher the price of electricity, the faster any upgrade pays back.
